How to actually take money online in the UAE
Four rails matter here, they need different things from you, and one of them works before any approval comes through.
Cards
You will need a payment gateway and a merchant account. Every provider asks for the same three things: your trade licence, your corporate bank account, and a live website with published policies.
A point worth knowing before you plan around it: Shopify Payments is not available in the UAE. If you are on Shopify, that means a third-party gateway — and that is exactly the case where Shopify charges an additional percentage on top of the gateway's own fee. What that costs at volume →
Tabby and Tamara
Buy now, pay later is ordinary here rather than novel, particularly on baskets between roughly AED 200 and AED 2,000. Both are separate applications and both settle to your account.
Where they earn their keep is the product page, not the checkout. A shopper looking at an AED 943 bottle decides differently when they can see four payments of AED 236 while they are still deciding. Showing it only at checkout means they have already left.
One caution: an authorised BNPL order is not a paid one. Make sure your system distinguishes the two before you ship against it.
Cash on Delivery
Still a real share of UAE orders, and the only rail that needs nobody's approval. You can take COD orders on day one while your card application is being reviewed.
The difficulty is not collecting the cash — it is reconciling it. Which orders were actually collected, which came back, and has the courier remitted what it owes you. How that reconciliation works →
Apple Pay and Google Pay
On a market where around four in five online purchases happen on a phone, a checkout that requires typing a card number is a checkout losing orders. Wallets usually ride on top of your existing card gateway rather than needing a separate application.
The order to do it in
- Switch COD on immediately. It costs nothing and needs no approval.
- Apply for cards the day your licence and bank account exist — the review is the slow part, so start it early.
- Add Tabby and Tamara next. Once your site is live and taking orders, these applications go more smoothly.
- Turn wallets on last. They are a setting on your gateway rather than a new relationship.
Provider requirements and fees change; confirm current terms directly with each provider. Nothing here is financial advice.
