What to charge for delivery in the UAE
Zones by emirate, a threshold that pays for itself, and no postcodes — because this country does not deliver by them.
Price by emirate, then by area
Your courier prices by zone, so your storefront should too. In practice most merchants end up with three or four bands: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, sometimes with Al Ain and the remote areas separated out.
The mistake to avoid is a single flat national rate. Either it is too high for Dubai — where most of your orders are — or it quietly loses money on every Fujairah delivery.
Free delivery thresholds actually work here
A threshold does two things: it raises average order value, and it removes the shipping cost from the decision at exactly the moment it is being made.
Set it above your current average order value but within reach of it — far enough to move behaviour, close enough to feel achievable. And set it per zone: free above AED 499 in Dubai does not have to mean free above AED 499 in Fujairah.
Postcodes are the tell
The UAE has no meaningful postal-code system for deliveries. Addresses are emirate, area, building, sometimes a landmark.
A checkout that demands a postcode is a checkout designed for somewhere else, and the customer notices at the worst possible moment — with their card already out. How zones work here →
Same-day is an expectation, not a premium
UAE shoppers are used to fast delivery across most categories. Where merchants get caught is promising same-day without capping how many orders each window can take.
Slots with capacity limits are what make same-day survivable. Without them you are writing cheques your afternoon cannot cash.
Apartments and towers
Much of the UAE lives in towers, where a large delivery means a service lift booking and building permission. Capturing the building, floor and access notes at the address step is the difference between one delivery attempt and two.
For furniture and large items this is not a detail — it is most of the delivery cost.
