Getting to your first hundred orders
Before you have budget or an audience, most marketing advice is written for businesses that already have both.
Start where the people already are
A new store has no traffic, and paid advertising into an empty funnel burns money teaching you things you could have learned for free.
In this market the first orders almost always come from three places: your own network, WhatsApp, and Instagram. None of them need a budget.
WhatsApp is a sales channel here, not a support channel
UAE customers will message a business on WhatsApp before they will email it, and they expect a reply within minutes rather than hours.
Put the number where it can be found, answer quickly, and treat the conversation as the sale — because it is. A catalogue link sent in a chat converts better than most ad campaigns a new store can afford.
Marketplaces for discovery, your store for the second order
Listing on Noon or Amazon.ae puts you in front of people your own site cannot reach for a long time. The commission is the price of that reach, and in year one it is usually worth paying.
What you must not do is stop there. Put an insert in the parcel, give a reason to register the product, and make the second order happen on your own store where you keep the margin and the customer. Where each one wins →
Abandoned carts before anything paid
The highest-yield message any new store sends is to somebody who already put something in the basket and then left. They have already decided they want it.
Set that up before you spend a dirham on advertising. It costs nothing and it recovers orders you have already paid to acquire.
What to ignore for now
- SEO as a growth plan. It works, and it works in months rather than weeks. Set the foundations, then leave it alone.
- Broad paid social. Without a converting store and a proven product, you are buying data at retail price.
- Influencers with large followings. Expensive and hard to attribute. A small local account with an engaged audience in your category usually outperforms them for a new store.
- Redesigning the homepage. With ten orders a week, the homepage is not your constraint.
Measure the one number that predicts everything
Repeat rate. In a market this small and this expensive to advertise in, a business that gets 30% of its customers to buy again is a different business from one that gets 10%.
It is also cheaper to improve than acquisition, and almost nobody measures it in their first year.
